CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
THEA
There was still snow on the ground from our snow day three days ago. Not that the Winter fae were complaining. I saw several of them playing in the snow or making elaborate snow sculptures, some enchanted with small movements of wings or heads, giving the yards along the street a magical effect that I decided the moment I saw them I would never get tired of.
âYou look lovely.â Devin rubbed my shoulders as I stood in front of the mirror two days before the New Yearâs Eve party. I was wearing a simple white sweater and the emerald deer necklace heâd bought me for Christmas.
âI always look like this.â
âYou always look lovely.â
I nudged him. âTease. It feels like I havenât seen Candie in forever, but I guess itâs only been a week.â
âCatch up with her, have fun, and next time we can show her how we do things in the Winter Court.â
âStop it.â I chuckled as he nipped my ear. âWeâre supposed to pick up Heather in a few minutes.â
âYou canât blame me for trying.â He kissed my temple and backed off. âLetâs get going then, before I change my mind and decide to have you for dinner instead.â
The heated look he gave me told me how serious he was about it. I pushed his shoulder lightly as I passed, heading for the car. âNo, Iâve been looking forward to this.â
The cool air was refreshing. The more I played with my fae powers the more connected I felt to the cold. I could sense the fae around me better too. They each had a different . . . feel?
Flavor? It was like a fingerprint that I could inspect from yards away. Each one was different. Devin warned me that Iâd learn to dread summer now, but for the moment I was glad to bask in the winter chill.
Devin opened my door for me before getting in and starting the car. I rolled my window down as we sped to Heatherâs apartment.
Passing the time watching frost melt on the windshield, I laughed as fat snowflakes began to fall, courtesy of Devin.
Heather was already outside waiting for us when we got there.
She looked elegant in an all-black outfit that matched her long silky hair. She wore a pair of black leather stilettos, unconcerned by her already-towering height. I was more than a little jealous of how good she looked.
Devin drove us to the meeting place and dropped us off at the door. Fae stares followed us through the streets that I recognized to be under Georginaâs care, but clearly word had gotten out about tonightâs arrangement, and no one said anything as Heather and I stepped onto the sidewalk.
âIâll be a couple blocks away, in a coffee shop getting some work done. Call if you need anything.â He looked sharply at Heather. âYou as wellâI know she might try to handle things on her own.â
âGot it, boss.â Heather winked at Devin and grabbed my arm, dragging me inside. My eyes
